Requirements become most valuable when they are used throughout development rather than left isolated in a specification document.

In machinery and equipment development, functional requirements and critical parameters can guide decisions involving motion, loads, interfaces, controls, tolerances, component selection, and other design characteristics. They also provide reference points for evaluating tradeoffs when multiple technical approaches are possible.
